Ian has 20 years international professional experience in health, safety and improvement within military, mining, rail, oil & gas and utilities. A combination of scientific research and operational leadership to support organisations in reducing risk, lowering cost whilst optimising productivity & performance. Ian’s industry career has focused on the leadership of several significant projects where he utilised Lean/Six Sigma and scientific methodologies to drive a step change improvement in performance whilst ensuring sustainability through associated culture change.
He is currently the Director of Melius Consulting/Sleep4Performance and has recently completed a PhD with the University of Western Australia (UWA), where he worked with elite sporting organisations/athletes to optimise performance. Ian has worked with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and professional teams in Super Rugby, Australian Rules Football, Basketball and Martial Arts.
As a global advisor for a major mining company, Ian was responsible for development of global practices, integration and project management within multiple product groups (Iron-Ore, copper, aluminum, diamonds, coal and uranium). This approach required the quantification, analysis and interpretation of multiple data streams to support health, safety, financial strength and productivity. Ian was an integral part of the global health team responsible for the development and deployment of a health standards and management across the business (60,000 workforce). Ian has held several operational, corporate and global roles within the mining industry during which time he experienced first-hand the project management systems and techniques at an operational level. He is most interested in the relationships with other disciplines enabling productivity to deliver true value to organisations.
Recently in conjunction with advancing his research interests, Ian has continued working within the mining sector (coal, iron ore and gold) facilitating several significant improvement projects for major mining companies including South 32, Karara Mining, Peabody and Goldcorp. Ian is highly sought after with professional athletes, working with Olympic and elite athletes with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and professional teams in Super Rugby, Basketball, Australian Rules Football (AFL) and martial arts (judo, boxing, grappling).
Ian is a regular speaker/chair at universities and international conferences in mining, transport, sports performance and physiology. He regularly contributes to media articles such as with the Australian Financial Review. He has also been featured on the health report on ABC radio, ABC radio national and numerous podcasts. Ian has appeared on ABC television, Channel 7, 9 and 10 in Australia. He was a TEDx Perth speaker in 2017. He has co-authored technical reports, guidelines for industry organisations and authored a number of scientific articles and is a regular reviewer for scientific peer reviewed journals.
